Eibsee is Grainau's most famous lake and lies directly at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. A suggested visit of roughly two hours covers the flat circular trail at a comfortable pace; the Grainau tourist office describes the lakeside path as family-friendly and suitable for strollers, and notes the lake is popular year-round.

The lake itself is free to visit, but parking and the Zugspitze cable car are separate paid items, so a day here has two clear cost layers. Swimming is allowed, with many places around the lake where you can access the water, and in summer the water temperature reaches 18 to 22 °C according to the Grainau tourist office. The Eibsee also supplies drinking water to around 30,000 people, so visitors are asked to help keep the shoreline clean.

Why Eibsee Deserves a Full Day

Eibsee was formed when the Isar-Loisach glacier retreated at the end of the Würm glacial period, leaving a depression that filled with water. The lake supplies drinking water to around 30,000 people from the surrounding water protection area, which is why the Grainau tourist office asks visitors to help keep it clean. With a flat lakeside path, swimming access and boat rentals in summer, the lake can fill a day on its own or serve as a half-day outing before or after the mountain.

Unlike many alpine lakes in protected areas, swimming is allowed at Eibsee. The lake sits at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level, so even summer water feels cool, and spring and autumn are much colder. The Grainau tourist office notes that in summer the water temperature reaches 18 to 22 °C, but that is a seasonal range rather than a fixed reading on any given date.

Getting There: Bus 323, Cogwheel Train and the Guest Card Detail

Public transport reaches Eibsee via bus 323 on the Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Grainau to Eibsee route, or via the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn cogwheel train. Travel between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Eibsee is free for Grainau guests with a valid guest card, which comes from your host; the Grainau tourist office also states that the Deutschlandticket is not accepted for this route if you do not hold the guest card. From Garmisch-Partenkirchen station you change to the cogwheel train or the bus to reach the lake, and the journey with Deutsche Bahn from Munich Central Station to Garmisch-Partenkirchen takes approximately 90 minutes before that change. For wider planning, see Garmisch-Partenkirchen landmark visitor guides.

Buses share the road with traffic and there are no dedicated bus lanes between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Eibsee, so delays happen in peak season. If a bus reaches capacity, the driver is instructed not to allow further passengers to board, but additional buses are deployed. Bicycles cannot be taken on the bus or cogwheel train due to capacity reasons, according to the Grainau tourist office.

Driving and Parking: Two Paid Lots and Early Arrival

Sponsored

There are two public paid parking lots at Eibsee: one at the Eibsee Hotel and one at the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway. Fees at the Eibsee Hotel depend solely on duration, while fees at the Zugspitzbahn lot depend on whether a mountain railway ticket is purchased, as the Grainau tourist office explains. Because rates change, check the official parking pages at zugspitze.de and eibsee.de for current fees before you set out.

There is only one access road and limited parking, and capacity fills quickly on fine days. If the parking spaces are occupied, information boards at the end of the motorway along the railway line indicate alternatives. Most visitors want to go to Eibsee early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

The Eibsee Circular Trail: 7.5 km, Roughly Two Hours

Sponsored

The Eibsee Rundweg is an easy 7.5 km loop with minimal elevation gain, generally taking around two hours at a comfortable pace according to detailed trip reports. The Grainau tourist office describes the lakeside path as family-friendly and suitable for strollers, though that is a statement about the path surface rather than a full accessibility guarantee. Allow extra time for photo stops, a swim or a drink at the Eibsee Alm.

Which direction you walk changes what you see. One detailed trip report recommends walking clockwise from the Eibsee Hotel parking area, which puts the best Zugspitze views and most photogenic spots in the second half of the loop. The report also notes that the most picturesque locations and swimming spots fall between the north shore and the east shore, so walk as the light suits your camera.

Swimming in Eibsee: Access, Temperatures and Etiquette

Swimming is allowed and there are many access points around the lake, with the main beach area on the south shore getting direct afternoon sun according to one detailed trip report. The Grainau tourist office states that summer water temperatures reach 18 to 22 °C, but the lake is cold even in summer, so the realistic window is May to September. Never assume a fixed temperature on a given date; check local conditions or ask at the tourist office.

Because Eibsee supplies drinking water for around 30,000 people, keep the shoreline clean and take everything with you. The lake is a blind lake with no surface drainage, so anything that enters the water stays in the basin. A towel, warm layer and water shoes make a swim more comfortable.

Boats and SUPs: Seasonal Rental and the Reserl

Sponsored

In summer, the boat rental service at Eibsee offers stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats and rowboats, alongside round trips on the historic passenger ship Reserl, always with the Wetterstein Mountains and the Zugspitze in view, according to the Grainau tourist office. Rental operates in the summer months near the lake entrance; exact opening dates and availability vary, so check the official Eibsee site before relying on it.

Rental prices seen in older guides date from 2021 and should not be treated as current. Confirm current rates and operating hours with the operator before you travel, and expect calmest water and smaller crowds in the morning. A boat or SUP gives you a different angle on the small islands and the Zugspitze reflections.

Eating and Drinking Around the Lake

Lakeside dining is limited. The Eibsee Hotel restaurant, the Seerestaurant Eibsee Pavilion and the Eibsee Alm beer garden are the main options according to one detailed trip report, and the hotel and pavilion both have lake views. Because choice is narrow and peak-season queues build, bringing a picnic and eating along the trail is a practical fallback.

The Grainau tourist office confirms there are several refreshment stops around the lake, and the trail passes several spots where you can sit by the water. If you want a sit-down meal, arrive outside the busiest lunch window. Carry water, as the loop has no regular fountains.

Pairing Eibsee with the Zugspitze Cable Car

The valley station of the Zugspitze cable car is just minutes from the lake, so combining the two in one day is straightforward, as the Grainau tourist office notes. From Eibsee station, you also need a separate ticket for the onward cogwheel train to the Zugspitzplatt and then the glacier train to the summit, so the cable car and the train segments do not share one ticket scope. Check what your ticket includes before boarding. For wider planning, see Zugspitze Visitor Guide.

One detailed trip report states a 2026 adult round-trip cable car price of around €78, but that figure comes from a third-party travel source and is not verified by the operator. Check the official Zugspitze pages for current prices and book only when the forecast is clear, because fog can destroy the value of the ascent. If the summit is clouded in, the lake loop alone is still a rewarding day.

Bad Weather and Nearby Alternatives

Camping directly at Eibsee is not allowed. Two large campsites, Camping Resort Zugspitze and Camping experience Zugspitze, are a few kilometres away in Grainau, according to the Grainau tourist office. Motorhome users should check the parking operators' guidance rather than assume overnight stays are permitted at the lake.

In bad weather, the Zugspitzbad in Grainau offers an indoor pool in winter and indoor and outdoor pools in summer, plus a sauna, as the Grainau tourist office states. Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers museums, the Olympia-Skisprungschanze and the Partnach Gorge for wet days, alongside the city's wider itinerary options for longer stays. For wider planning, see Garmisch-Partenkirchen city travel guides.

Eibsee works as both a half-day walk and a full day when paired with the Zugspitze. Arrive early or late to improve your parking odds, bring a picnic because dining is limited, and treat the loop as a gentle walk of roughly two hours with time for a swim. Confirm current parking fees, boat rental rates and cable car prices on the official pages before you go.
